Noses - By Aileen Fisher

I looked in the mirror and looked at my nose;
it's the funniest thing,
the way it grows.
Stuck right out where all of it shows
with two little holes where the breathing goes.

I looked in the mirror and saw in there
the end of my chin and the start of my hair,
and between there isn't much space to spare
with my nose, like a handle, sticking there.

If you ever want to giggle and shout
and you can't think what to do it about,
just look in the mirror and then, no doubt
you'll see how funny your nose sticks out.

The trampoline - By Josh

On Saturday I went on the trampoline. I went as high as a red shiney rocket. I felt like I was in a storm becasue I could feel the wind rushing through my face like a car. It was cold and warm at the same time because it was cold but I was jumping around. Boang, bounce, high as I jumped around like a kangaroo. Next I did a flip. I was as fast as a cheetah. Next minute boing, I landed it. I did more then I felt dizzy like I could fall off the tramp. Then I lay down. I could feel a gentle breeze across my back so I climbed down the old rusty ladder and jumped down. Then I went inside. It was awesome.

Sandwich Response from Miss Irvine:
Josh, I love some of the language features you've used to describe what you felt when you were on the trampoline. I especially like "I felt like I was in a storm."
You have a good beginning and a personal comment at the end, but I think it would be helpful if you worked on using paragraphs in your writing to separate different thoughts.
I also really like you're use of 'because' and 'so' to make your sentences different lengths. It makes it less boring for the reader.

Skiing - By Callum

On Monday some year 5 and 6s went skiing. The bus ride was really long.

When we got off the bus I went to the platter. When I finally got to the top I started to go down. Weeee! I shouted. Clack! as I went down the slope.

Then is was lunch time. I had a good lunch.

After that we went skiing. There was another two and a half hours. Then it was time to go back home.

Sandwich Response from Miss Irvine:
Callum, you're writing has improved so much from the start of this year. You are now writing in paragraphs and adding more detail to your work.
I like that you've attempted to use speech to help you retell what happened, but you need to work on using the correct punctuation for speech marks.
You have used time words well to retell your events in order and you have a good informative introduction.

Who inspires you?

Who inspires you? on PhotoPeach

How many of these people can you name?

Can you name what they are known for?

What do they have in common?

Do any of these people inspire you? Which New Zealander inspires you the most?

You will be choosing a New Zealander to find out some more about and presenting your information in a report format. (We will learn about that!)

Before you start your inquiry, use your little book to record what you already know, what you want to find out and to figure out some questions you want answered.

Once you've done that, this wee video might help you get started with doing some research:

A Skip to Beat Bad Temper - Cynthia Mitchell

An angry tiger in a cage
Will roar and roar with rage,
And gnash his teeth and lash his tail,
For that's how tigers rant and rail.
I keep my temper in a cage,
I hate it when it roars with rage,
I hate its teeth, I hate its tail,
So when it starts to rant and rail,
I tell my mum, I tell my dad,
I tell them why it's feeling bad,
And then I skip and skip and skip,
And lash my rope just like a whip
And when I skip because I'm cross,
My temper-tiger knows who's boss,
And when I've skipped and whipped like mad,
My temper-tiger's not so bad.
I have to keep it tame this way,
Or it will eat me up one day.

This might help with your reading and spelling.

Adventure

I stepped on to the sloshy ground. Glug, slurp, glug. I could hear the trees rustling.

Then I saw a dark shadow. It looked like a hairy sasquatch but it wasn't. It was a bushy tree.

I took a short cut through the ferns and wild flowers. The birds were sasquatch like mad. "Squeekpeekdieek," that's what it sounded like.

We came to an opening. It was the Darfield desert, it's the only desert in the world with puddles the size of lakes.

I slowly trudged along, "No-o-o-o-o, why me," I yelled at the top of my lungs because in front of me was the most biggest puddle ever. I had no choice but to squidge through it.

I finally got out, the air was hot and the sun was roaring. "Ro-o-o-oaw."

The adventure that I had was the most fun ever.

P.S. No sasquatchs were harmed in the making of the story.

The Touch of Horror

"No, no, no, no," I whispered grosely.  "I will not touch a dead deer." "Do it, do it, do it," My whole family was shouting. "Oh fine," I felt grosed out! I felt inside like I could pop like a gross dragon. "Really, look I can see all their insides," I was thinking in my head.

"Okay I'm ready to touch now." "Go, go,  go," everyone was shouting. I touched a dead deer. I was relaxed. It was as soft as a piece of possum fur. Soft, sad and scared all at the same time .... but I thought it was quite nice! "Ahhh," I said as I was as relaxed as a baby sleeping.

Then it was time to go! "Ohhh but it was to nice." "Just come," mum nudged me as she talked. I finally left.

I had the best time ever!

Chucking Pea Straw

On a sunny beautiful Sunday, me, Georgie, Jake, Nicole and Nev chucked so crunchy so chunky pea straw onto their wonderful garden. Sling! down, down, down went the pea straw. Nicole said, "You guys work faster." We said, "Okay." So we worked as fast as a running dog.

Soon we had to get a new, fresh bail of super crunchy, chunky, crawly pea straw. We super quickly rolled one over. We finished the bail. Meanwhile Nev rolled another crunchy bail over to the beautiful garden. Soon it was finished. We made a fabulous swing, "Weee."

I enjoyed chucking pea straw because I got to chuck it at Georgie.

Queens Birthday Weekend Journal Writing

Bounce, Catch, Throw
By Jess

The loud whistle blew and it all started. It was the awesome Darfield Force playing against mean Kirwee Primary A. First I was running around trying to guard my partner when "boom" I had the ball in my hands. I quickly throw it to someone in my team.

Then suddenly the whistle blew. We had got a goal. Everyone cheered loudly so I ran back to my place. I was so happy until I heard this loud voice saying, "oh well done, you're so good." I turned around and it was someone from the other team. I was so-o-o-o angry!!

Next the whistle blew. They had the ball because I was angry with that girl, when she threw it. I took all my strength and did this enourmous intercept and it flew right in the hands of Stefanie. I was so pleased with myself. Before I knew it, we had another goal, then another, then another. By that time we had seven but they had 26 and when I was thinking about that they got another goal and the whistle blew for full game.

The score was 27-7 to them. I enjoyed the game but thought that the Kirwee team were a bit mean.

Birds
By Niamh

Guess what happened in the bright sunny weekend? Two tiny birds flew into our shiny, clean window. One bird died of a bright, bright red bleeding nose but the other bird just survived!

We threw the bird into the stinky dark haunted rubbish bin where dead things go. The dead dark brown bird was a robin bird and the surviving bird was a black bird who had a bright yellow beak and a bright blue, yellow and black bubbly eyes.

We got to hold the black bird with bubbly eyes. Until it flew away to its mini trees in our massive natural home. I liked saving the bird because I love animals and nature.

My Netball Game
By Claire

On a bright Saturday moorning our team had a netball game at 8.30. We did it at the netball courts.

First, we warmed up. We did catching , throwing, passing and excersing.

Then, it was the first half. We versed South Methen.

I was GS but I didn't score any goals but GA did two goals for the first half.

After that, it was the second half. I didn't play it but it was good to watch. We scored some goals then the other team scored some goals.

Finally, we finished and the score was 3-4 and we won!

My Motorbike
By Brayden

On a sunny Monday I got out of bed and put my motorbike gear on.

Then I got outside and pushed my bike out. It was as heavy as a big elephant.

When I got it out I was ready to go. I hopped on my bike and started it. Broom-room. It was as loud as a tiger.

I went from gear one to gear two then after a while I put on gear three. It went fast.

My motorbike is blue, black and white. It is a Yamaha brand. I have a Thor helmet and Thor goggles. My goggles are as stretchy as string. I have Fox pants and a Fox t-shirt. I have Pulse boots and gloves and I have three stickers on my motorbike.

I like my motorbike because they're fun to ride.

The Gymnasium
By Callum

On the happy Monday I went to the gymnasium. I loved it. I learnt a handstand, a flip, cartwheel.
It was easy to learn.

Week Three Sykping

This week Darren and Georgie shared their Journal writing with our Room 12 New River e-buddies. They received feedback on their learning intention and then they made any changes they needed to.

Learning Intention: I am learning to use complex sentences in my writing.

Success Criteria: I will be successful when I include at least 5 complex sentences in my journal writing. I know they will be complex when I use words like: although, as, becasue, but, if, or, since.

Read their final editions below:

Going Duck Shooting
By Georgie

On an awesome Saturday I went duck shooting. I went with all my family. We shot 40 ducks and that was fun!!! When we got there ma and my grandma stayed in the cabin while the others went shooting. We ate lollies and chips. Jake, my little brother came inside and our dad but dad went back out and Jake stayed inside with us. When the rest of the others came in, my little cousin arrived. Her name is Amelia. A while after she arrived we had dinner. We had sausages and steak for dinner... "Morning," I say. "Morning," the others reply. At six o'clock in the morning we went back out duckshooting. It was really cold, "brrrrr!!" After a while we went home. I went into town with grandma to buy a mothers day present for mum. I liked going duck shooting becasue my special family was there.

Goldfish Hunting
By Darren

On Sunday 6th May, mum and I went to Christine's house to fish for some goldfish. They had a ginormous outdoor pond. It was shaped like a figure of eight.
It had big goldfish, small goldfish and every size imaginable. They were gold, grey, and black.
First mum and I put on our togs and hopped in. It was as cold as an ice cream.
Mum slipped into the pond on some moss but I didn't fall in.
We had a trout net and a very small net. I had the small net, mum had the big net.
First I caught a fish. I called it Small Furey because it was furious to get out of the icecream tub. Then I started to sink into all of the stones.
Then mum caught one. She called it Toothless because it had no teeth and we had also been to How to Train your Dragon arena specatacular in Auckland.
In the end we had two grey goldfish.

Cheers to 50 years! - It's in the Bag!

On Thursday we watched part of an episode of
It's in the Bag!
It's in the Bag is a NZ TV programme made in the 1960s (only 50 years ago!)

We had to look for some changes.

What type of show is it?
Jess - "It's a gameshow"

What is a modern-dag programme that is similar?
Elise - "Ellen"
Jack - "Deal or no Deal"
Callum - "Lotto"

What do you notice about the prizes?
Jess - "They were for everyday use"
Darren - "They were big (size)"
Makayla - "They looked new and shiney"
Tom N - "They were modern day. Like the automatic washing machine."

Do you think the prizes are expensive?
Yes

Do you think they though the prizes were expensive?
Yes

What do you notice about thier clothes?
Elise - "They are smart, fancy and sensible"
Ben - "They are old fashioned"
Darren - "There is more styling these days. Their clothes were only black and grey."
Caitlin - "I noticed the lady's baggy silver top under her dress"

What is different about how TV programmes recieve mail now?
Tom S - "They got thier mail by letter"
Class - Mail now comes by "email, call, text, letter, twitter and facebook

What else did you find interesting?
Jess - "The prizes were popular"
Tatiana - "The prizes were expensive"
Darren - "There was suspense of what people won and the big bag of letters"

We are going to be looking at technology change. We thought of some questions we'd like to answer.
  • How do we think to change it?
  • How did it change?
  • Why didn't we leave it the way it was?
  • Why change it?
  • Who changed it?

ANZAC Day

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. Anzac Day is a day for us to remember the soldiers who went to fight in World War One. We especially remember the soldiers who died on April 25 1915 during the fighting on the beaches at Gallipolli, in Turkey.

We celebrate Anzac Day with some traditions and symbols.
Poppies - The red, or Flanders poppy was one of the first flowers to grow and bloom in the mud 'Flanders Field'
Flander Field - A famous war poem written about what happened in the Flanders region of Belgium
The Last Post - Millitary bugle call
Anzac Biscuits - A long-life biscuit that could be sent to soldiers

We are learning to use apostrophes to shorten words.

Words that are shortened are called contractions.
Some examples are: do not = don't, it is = it's and they are = they're.
An apostrophe shows where a letter or letters are missing.

Basic Facts - 2x tables

Are you trying to learn your 2x tables?
Maybe this video will help you!

Oral Language

We have been working on asking questions for our oral language.
We had to think about what questions we would like to ask the man in the picture.

Maths at Home

Hi Parents/Caregivers,

I have found this great link which might give you some fabulous ideas for maths activities at home.

I recommend having a look at the 'Maths at Our House' section and 'Number Knowledge Activities.' On the Number Knowledge Activities page, you can click on the domain (Number Sequence, Place Value, Number Facts) for the level your child is working at. You can look at their previous school report to find this information, although it never hurts to start with the Stage 3/4 activities to review and practice those skills before moving on.

Yes we can can

We have been learning a very nifty little number called 'Yes we can, can.'
It's pretty quick, but we are getting faster. Try it for yourself. The first video has the same music we use, the second clip is the same song, just a little different.

Enjoy!

Monday Journal Writing

Each Monday we write a journal entry and then focus our editing lesson around it. Sometimes, some students will type thier journal entries straight onto one of our fabulous netbooks.

Below are some of the entries for this week. The students started editing them, but Miss Irvine has also done a little bit!

Ben
Last night I went to the river with my Dad, my sister and my dog. We were throwing the stick for him. He was swimming really far. Katie and I jumped on the back of the ute and we drove down the river. Archie, the dog was running after us and barking because he thought we were leaving him behind. It was really funny. It was fun.

Josh
During the weekend we had to shift all the furniture out of my house into our garage because our house is getting painted and getting fixed. It took me a long time to get all my toys and furniture out of my room.  It took us all day. Then the next day we got all the shelves and book cases and things like that out of the house. It was really tiring and it was hot. I heard bang boom and all sorts of sounds as we were shifting lots of things in and out. I have to sleep in my sister’s room because my room is getting done. I felt really hot and bored. At the end of the day I had dinner and played army sets and watched TV and had a rest. Then I went to bed and fell to sleep quietly.

Makayla
On Saturday I went to Indies birthday. She turned 1. She has blond hair. She can walk, and say, mum, dad and baby. She had a Pooh Bear cake. My mum made the cake. There were balloons everywhere. You could hear kids screaming and people talking, balloons popping too. I had lots of fun. I took a bite of the cake. It was yummy!

On Sunday night I watched a whole rugby game. I stayed up until 9:30. For tea we had curry. I had a onion bhaji, butter chicken, rice, and naan bread.

“Yay,” as I went in the car to go to Wainui on Saturday morning.  It was a very long ride. I got bored when I was in the car. We didn’t take the boat because it was raining and windy. When we first got there we unpacked the food. I found out that there were stairs. It was cool.

“Yay Harry is coming over. He’s here.” Britten shouts, then he walks in with a huge yummy cake. Then we went outside to play with Harry. We started to play on the trampoline. We played crack the egg. Then we played tag. Then we played ball rush and then we hopped off the trampoline and Harry had to go.

Brrrm went the motor as I hopped in the soaking wet seat . Bump bump the boat went as we chugged down the river. Ekkk went the brakes as the boats pulled up on a small stony island. “What are we doing here?” I said. “Fishing,” dad replied excitedly. Dad shouted out suddenly, “I got one, I got one,” as he pulled a big slimy fish ashore. “What a whopper,” I said to dad, “well done.” Then we got in the boats and started off down the river again.
