The Moon - 9 August

Today we learnt about the moon. We now know:

  • We have one moon and we can only see one side of it
  • The moon orbits earth
  • It takes 28 days
  • The moon reflects light from the sun
  • When parts of the moon are in shade we can't see those parts - that's why the moon sometimes looks different
  • There are 8 phases of the moon

After acting out the rotations of the moon, we watched this video:

Miss Irvine found this cool rap - some of the information isn't very accurate, but it's fun!

Our Star, The Sun - Thursday 1 August

Today we learnt that:

  • Stars emit (give out) light, which is why we can see them
  • The Sun is a star
  • The Sun looks bigger than other stars because it is closer to us
  • Other stars look small because they are very, very, very far away
  • Stars form patterns and pictures called constellations

Our Star, The Sun - Wednesday 31 July

Today we learnt that:

  • When the light shines on a place on the globe, it is like the sun shining on that spot on Earth
  • It is day time in New Zealand when the sun is shining on our part of Earth
  • It is night time in New Zealand when the sun is not shining our part of the Earth
  • The world takes one spin to make a complete cycle of day and night (24 hours)
  • It is the Earth that moves - not the sun!

Our Star, The Sun - Tuesday 30 July

Today we made a timeline of our day. It goes round in a circle because each day is generally the same.

We learnt that:

  • Day and night happened regularly
  • At night there is no sun
  • It is day time when we can see the sun
  • It takes 24 hours for night and day to happen, then a new 24 hours happens
  • The sun also gives us heat during the day

  • Anna S: My arm went fiery and sore.
  • Brenna: "Eww, a worm!" I yelled.

  • Hayden: When the ball went out, Hunter kicked it, then they booted it in the goal.
  • Jess T: As I stepped out of the dripping, soggy car I scraped off some snowflakes.
  • Cameron: "Wow." It was so cold I could feel the freezing, cold water making a swimming pool on my hair and then sliding off.
  • Logan: The wind was as cold as ice cubes, as it blew straight past my face.

Punctuation is fun!

  • Punctuation makes our writing make sense.
  • It is very important to show where sentences end and new ones begin.
  • Did you know we can use kung fu to help us?

Check out this link to watch another class using it.

Art Workshop: How to draw NZ Birds

Art Workshop - NZ Birds on PhotoPeach

We drew a Paradise Duck. Neil Shaskey helped us.

WALT: Edit our writing

When we edit our work we have to read it heaps of times! We check all of these things.

  • Read it out loud - does it make sense? Add or remove what you need to.

  • Read it out loud - where do I stop to take a breath? Put in your full stops and capital letters.

  • Read it to check for capital letters - specific people, place or thing.

  • See what detail you can add to each event. Are you missing any of the 5Ws? Can you add something extra to your personal comment?

  • Is there anything you need to take out? This might be things that aren't related to story, or that you've repeated.

  • Check your spelling. Underline any words you think might be incorrect - sound them out as carefully as you can, then check them using a word list or dictionary.

A successful storyteller:

  • involves thier audience
  • uses bodylanguage and body space to create atmosphere
  • paints pictures in our imaginations, but still allows us to add our own thoughts and images
  • varies their voice to express different emotions or characters
  • varies the tempo and energy level throughout the story to keep the listeners interested

WALT: recognise short vowel sounds

The vowels are A E I O U. They can have long or short vowels.

The sound the letter makes is different from its name.
We are learning to recognise short vowel sounds. They are the sounds in the middle of these words.

WALT: our 2x tables

Elementary, my dear, two time two is four.
Elementary, my dear, two time three is six.
Elementary, my dear, two time four is eight.
Elementary, my dear, two time five is ten.

Two times one is two, of course
And it must occur to you,
You get an even number
Every time you multiply by two.

Elementary, my dear, two time six is twelve.
Elementary, my dear, two time seven is fourteen.
Elementary, my dear, two times eight is sixteen.
Elementary, my dear, two times nine is eighteen.

Two times ten is twenty, eleven twice is twenty-two.
Double twelve that's twenty-four, thirteen twice is twenty-six,
Fourteen twice is twenty-eight, fifteen twice is thirty, now you build it up on thirty,
Sixteen twice is thirty-two, elementary.
Seventeen twice is thirty-four, elementary.
Eighteen twice is thirty-six, elementary.
Nineteen twice is thirty-eight, elementary.
Twenty twice is forty, and it must occur to you,
You can double any number,
All you do is multiply by two...

Elementary, my dear, two time two is four. (Woo!)
Elementary, my dear, two time three is six. (Yeah!)
Elementary, my dear, two time four is eight. (Woop!)
Elementary, my dear, two time five is ten. (Yeah!)
