On Friday we had our first philosophy session. The purpose of these sessions is to get us in the learning 'pit'. We had to really think about things in order to come up with our thoughts and opinions.
There were two rules: we must respect what other people think and we cannot 'sit on the fence.'
Our topic: What is a name?
How it went: The first person came up with "a name is something someone is called", but they were challenged with "so if I called you silly, is that your name?" Someone else said "a name is unique to you." So they were challenged with "but we have two Toms in this class, does that mean they are the same person?" The children also got the chance to think about, if their name was changed, would they be a different person?
Many children are still left in the pit! Perhaps you'd like to ask your child if they've come up with an answer yet......
That was realy hard
